Ideological Peripheries in Europe
October 25, 2024 – Institute of State and Law, Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague

After the fall of communist regimes, Europe embarked on a neoliberal path that emphasizes the free market and individual rights. However, many countries east of the former Iron Curtain still bear the label of "periphery." How do these countries resist this classification on the level of identity and values? And are there viable alternatives to the neoliberal system on the periphery of Europe? Experts on ideological movements will discuss how political parties and social movements on the periphery delegitimize the mainstream and how the ideological gap between the center and the periphery can be bridged.

Key Speakers: Dr. Emilija Tudzarovska, Ph.D., Joseph Grim Feinberg, Ph.D.

Periphery, Region, Landscape
November 29, 2024 – Center for Theoretical Studies, Prague

Peripheries are not only a geographical term but also a space where the connection to areas that determine the system's functioning weakens. These places can serve as refuges from the system or as terrain for alternative forms of existence. What is the lifestyle of periphery inhabitants, and what specific landscape emerges here? This workshop will offer not only a geographical perspective but also a sociological, anthropological, and cultural one, exploring how marginal areas seek new meaning and identity in a changing world.

Key Speakers: Mgr. Radan Haluzík, Ph.D., Mgr. Karolína Pauknerová, Ph.D.

Law, Identity, and Normality
December 13, 2024 – Faculty of Law, Masaryk University, Brno

Identity is defined by the difference between unification and exclusion, and this differential nature gives rise to the duality of normality and abnormality. How is normality shaped within the Czech legal context, and what influence do legislative and judicial institutions have on this process? This workshop will focus on legal and social constructions of normality and identity, exploring the relationship between law and social norms and revealing the zones of exclusion that this process creates.

Key Speakers: Doc. Mgr. Eva Šlesingerová, Ph.D., RNDr. Michal Pitoňák, Ph.D.
